What Does the Provision of God Mean?
By Mattew Maher
We are often waiting for the provision of God but without the right vision of God. Meaning, it is easy to miss the fact that God's very presence is our ever-present provision.
Always. God is there. He is always there. And when Jesus ascended back to heaven, He left us with the Helper of Heaven. The Holy Spirit. Thus, the greatest provision for the soul (which takes spiritual vision to behold) is having an ever-present awareness of God's there-ness.
However, as a believer, there will be times when you feel as if you are alone, and that God's presence didn't make your heart His home. But these times are usually used as isolation experiences that God desires for us to draw closer to Him.
He is there even in our darkest hours, but like a parent who follows closely behind his newly-walking toddler without touching them, so too does our God walk closely behind us. He does not leave us alone in the dark, He just wants us to “be still” while in the dark and know that He is there.
The provision of God that we can confidently rest assured in, is the presence of God which continually brings rest accordingly.
In this account recorded in Exodus, Moses’ prayer is what must be noted. The backstory can be read separately as to “how and why” the Israelites and Moses were on this journey of faith, but let us learn “how” to pray like Moses and “why” it is crucial to seek assurance.
“Then Moses said to the Lord, ‘See, You say to me, Bring up this people. But you have not let me know whom You will send with me.’ Yet You have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found grace in My sight.’ Now therefore, I PRAY, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people. And He said, ‘My presence will go with you, and I will give your rest.’” — Exodus 33: 12-14
Now, therefore, I pray! Anytime you see a “therefore” in Scripture, you should always pause and ask yourself and God what’s that “there for?” It’s there for you to understand the power in the next 2 words — I PRAY! As Moses faithfully asked God about his journey and His presence, he was essentially saying, “God, You said You know me. You said I’m favored. And if this be true, please show me which way to go. Please show me Your Presence!”
God’s response still rings true today for us and He will answer us the same way when we ask Him to show us His will for our lives. When we ask in His will, He will show us His way.
As people of prayer, we can be confident that God’s Presence is His Provision.
And even when we do not feel Him, we can pray that He makes His feel known, which will always be His peace that we can know. His rest. “And He said, “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest" (Exodus 33:14).
God honors our prayers that seek His presence and His guidance. He knows that we have no idea where we are going, and He purely desires for us to reach out to Him so He can reach down to us.
Prayer, my friend, is the language of heaven and it is with such lines of communication that we must continually use to ring through and true to His promises. He is always there with us and is waiting for us to call on Him in prayer. Place yourself in Scripture, in Moses’ sandals, and know that you can pray forth such rested assurance.
It’s a provisional guarantee that His Presence will always be there. Whether you feel it or not, God says, “I’m with you!”
