Remarkably and Wondrously Made: Do You Know This?

By Aaron Joseph Hall

Do you believe that you’re fearfully and wonderfully made? I love how the Christian Standard Bible translates Psalm 139:13-14: “For it was you who created my inward parts; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I will praise you because I have been remarkably and wondrously made. Your works are wondrous, and I know this very well” (emphasis added).

You were not created by happenstance. You are not a mistake or an accident. The Bible says that God is the author or source of life (see Acts 3:15). I love what Rick Warren writes in his book The Purpose-Driven Life: “You are not an accident. Your birth was no mistake or mishap, and your life is no fluke of nature. Your parents may not have planned you, but God did. He was not at all surprised by your birth, In fact, he expected it.”

How does that make you feel knowing you were not only created by the God who created everything in the universe but that he created you with intentionality? Amazing!

Why am I here?

Is this a question you’ve asked yourself before? When you look up into the night sky and see the vastness of space or look at the many wonders on our planet it’s easy to want to know why you’re even here…why do we exist? Truthfully, we are here because God wanted us here and he does everything on purpose for a purpose! As I mentioned above, you were not created by happenstance.

God knows you

Psalm 139:1 says, “O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar” (ESV). God knows everything about you. When he created you he knew the color hair you would have, how tall you would be, when you would be born, and when your life will end. He knows every detail about you. There’s no hiding anything from him because he’s the one who created you!

God made you with purpose

Ephesians 2:10 says, “God has made us what we are, and in our union with Christ Jesus he has created us for a life of good deeds, which he has already prepared for us to do” (GNT). God didn’t just randomly create you without any plan. No, you were well-thought of! God has a purpose—good deeds—that He’s prepared just for you! If that’s the case, then that means God made you with purpose. You are no mistake. Your life has meaning because the One who created you fashioned you with purpose on purpose!

As I ponder why I am here, how God knows me and made me with purpose I can’t help but feel overwhelmed with joy—God is so good to us! As a father of three boys, I marvel at God’s handiwork. He made each of my kids unique, knows them better than I do, and has a plan for their life that’s better than any plan I could make up for them. A human is God’s masterpiece, and he’s entrusted us to raise these remarkably and wondrously created little humans who are ultimately made after his own image. What an honor that is!

To be remarkably and wondrously made means we should continually live in awe of God—of his wonderful glory, amazing grace, and endless love. I’ll end with this thought: isn’t it amazing that Psalm 139 mentions God knit us or put us together in our mother’s womb? That shows intentionality—that shows care, love, and joy over what he was crafting! Believe it or not, God loves you more than you know.

You are not here by happenstance. Rest in that truth today.
