Encourage Yourself in the Lord

Scripture tells us in one of the hardest times of his life, David "encouraged himself in the Lord."

He was the King of a nation - God's people. He had already seen God's favor in so many areas of his life. He had faithful friends like Jonathan. What more could he ask for in order to "feel" successful and happy.

The truth is that no matter how much we accomplish or receive from life, we all have times that we need to do this - to "encourage ourselves in the Lord."

Establishing a healthy confidence and excitement about what God is doing in our lives is one of the most important things we can do.

Sometimes I can get so focused and ambitious on the future that I never think to stop and celebrate all God has done.

Looking back and noticing God's faithfulness and goodness can be very refreshing. Here are three steps:

1. Celebrate

Take a day off, sleep in, wear your favorite clothes, turn up your favorite music, go to your favorite restaurant, go on a shopping spree, etc.

2. Thankfulness

Write down a long list counting your blessings, and all the little things in life you are thankful for, and too often take for granted.

3. Serve

Do something to help those around you less fortunate.
