Burned Out on Religion

Are you tired?  Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you will recover your life. I will show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me - watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill fitting on you. Keep company with me and you will learn to live freely and lightly. Matthew 11:28-30 (Message).

We try so hard as Christians.  We have a greater capacity for conviction of our wrongdoings and many times we may be too busy or too focused on life to tend to our own souls.

I love the way the Message Bible puts this passage.  Jesus is calling us "Get away with me and you will recover life."

There have been many times where I am burned out, and even times where I feel burned out by religion.  Usually this is a sign that I am doing it on my own, going through the motions of attending church, doing ministry and forgetting to get away with my Savior.  When I draw back to Jesus, spending precious time with Him in the Scriptures and in meditative prayer, I am made new again.  Let's stop going through the motions and do the actual "walking" with our Lord.

I'm reminded of a statement I used to say in Bible College, "Spending time with the Lord is not the most important thing in your relationship with Jesus.  It is your relationship with Jesus."
