Reaction To Historic Overturn of Roe v. Wade
By Alex Murashko
Christian leaders and pro-life activists continue to rejoice over the ruling by the Supreme Court on Friday (June 24, 2022), that overturned Roe v. Wade. A 5-4 majority vote in the Dobbs case highlighted the fact that “the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion.”
Think Eternity ministry leader Matt Brown (@evangelistmatt) posted his reaction to the SCOTUS decision on his various social media platforms.
“We rejoice at more protection for innocent, unborn, precious babies,” Brown stated. “This is a historic ruling that many have prayed and worked decades for and shifts the spiritual atmosphere of our nation.
“God knits us together in our mothers womb (Psalm 139:13). We are made in the image of God. Life is sacred.”
While the Supreme Court decision returned the issue of abortion to the states, just hours after the ruling, “abortion activists immediately went into a frenzy and took to the streets across the country in protest. As the night went on, the protests became larger and more out of control,” NewsBuster’s Kevin Tober reported.
However, protests and violence over the weekend did not deter pro-life group leaders from standing firm in their beliefs.
“The Court not only overturned Roe but flat out rejected the argument that women need abortion to achieve their dreams, have the careers they want, and ultimately deny their femininity,” pro-life advocate Abby Johnson said. “This is a decision that pro-lifers have long awaited and I am so humbled to have been a part of that fight for the last 13 years since walking away from Planned Parenthood.”
Polls show that the majority of Americans want Roe to stand, Johnson said. “But, the majority of Americans have not worked in abortion clinics and have not seen firsthand the utter destruction that the physical act of abortion causes on the unborn baby and the mother.
“The recovery room in abortion clinics is quite possibly the saddest place on Earth. And women don’t deserve that. They deserve better than abortion and that’s what my own ministries have been working towards for many years and will continue to do so now that the fight over abortion is moving to the states – instead of one fight, we now have 50. But there is nothing greater to fight for than the lives of the innocent.”
Dr. James Dobson of Family Institute stated, “Roe was built on a lie that somewhere hidden in our Constitution there existed a right to destroy children in the womb.”
Dobson said that the ruling in 1973 shocked the nation and divided the country. “It was an exercise in raw judicial power. History will judge it as one of the court’s most shameful moments.
“But now the court has corrected its mistake. Roe is dead, and, as a result, millions of innocent babies will have a chance to live and be welcomed into the world and protected by the promises of our Constitution and Declaration of Independence.”
Author Randy Alcorn, founder and director of Eternal Perspective Ministries declared on Facebook: “Praise God for his faithfulness through all these years. Of course, the battle for the hearts and minds of people is not over at all. It is going to be all the more necessary and important now that Roe v. Wade has been overturned.”
Abortion continues to be fully legal In states such as his state of Oregon, just as it was for years before Roe v. Wade, Alcorn stated.
“In other states abortion on demand will no longer be legal, and new pro-life laws will be implemented,” he said. Fierce debates and violence against pro-life groups have already occurred as he predicted.
“Just as pro-lifers became more motivated when the law of the land was against the rights of the unborn, so now pro-abortion forces will be mobilized and motivated and will aggressively raise funds and recruit volunteers to fight to make abortion universally legal once again.
“Please pray for the cause of unborn children and be grateful for the change in law while being alert to the fact that hearts and minds, not just laws, really do need to be changed,” Alcorn said.
CBN (Christian Broadcasting Network) News White House Correspondent Abigail Robertson told Think Eternity that this is truly a historic moment in history that she will remember for years to come.
“When the decision came down, many pro-life advocates told my colleagues and I that our work is only just getting started,” Robertson said. “Our news team at CBN is dedicated to continued coverage of this issue from the Christian perspective as the power returns to states and Christian communities rally around caring for women who need help, love, and support through their unplanned pregnancies.”
Calvary Chapel Chino Hills Pastor Jack Hibbs pointed out that although the SCOTUS ruling was historic, nothing changes in California, where his church is located. States will now have a choice whether to abide by federal law or state law in regards to abortion. The state’s governor has already made it known that California will be a sanctuary state for abortions.
“It’s my prayer that God is starting to move in America,” Hibbs says in a video posted on his Facebook page. “We don’t know yet, but we do know this: we need to celebrate good news when we hear it and when we see it.”
While noting that those who are opposed to the overturning of Roe v. Wade are “freaking out,” he said, “It’s a good day for those who want to see life be lived, freedoms upheld, the law followed, and our founding documents still leading us and guiding us as a republic.”
As other leaders have said, the battle is not over.
“The court has taken the issue of abortion and returned it to the states,” Dobson said. “The people of each state will now have the opportunity to debate and to try to persuade their fellow citizens. Then they can reach their own conclusions on the fundamental issue of the sanctity of life and pass laws that reflect that consensus.”
