3 Christian Books Every Follower of Jesus Should Read

By Aaron Joseph Hall

I love to read books. There are several Christian authors that I follow because their books are not only Biblically solid but they always push me to go deeper in my walk with Jesus.

Of course, no book is of more importance than the Bible.

I do believe God uses different writers to write books that are anointed, ordained, and timely. They might not be “God-breathed” like Scripture but they can still be messages that impact generations!

Why read books by Christian writers?

As followers of Jesus, we should be eager to grow in our faith. I firmly believe God can use Christian books to challenge us, teach us, and bless us. But only if such books are rooted in God’s Word.

Anything I write is not anywhere near as important as what God’s Word says. If you ever come across a Christian book that hardly mentions the Bible, references Scripture, or refers you to God’s Word then you should toss it. Get rid of the book.

Any impactful Christian book I’ve read always pointed back to the Bible.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

No book will replace the Bible. Ever.

The Christian books on the list below have challenged me and pointed me back to the Bible. They are written by authors who love Jesus and desire to honor Him through the written word.

3 Christian Books Every Follower of Jesus Should Read

1) Whisper by Mark Batterson

Taken from Amazon.com’s description: “The voice that spoke the cosmos into existence is the same voice that parted the Red Sea and made the sun stand still in the midday sky. One day, this voice will make all things new, but it’s also speaking to you now!

That voice is God’s voice, and what we’ve learned from Scripture is that He often speaks in a whisper. Not to make it difficult to hear Him, but to draw us close.

Many people have a tough time believing God still speaks. Sure, in ancient times and in mysterious ways, God spoke to His people, but is He still speaking now?

Mark Batterson certainly believes so. And he wants to introduce you to the seven love languages of God; each of them unique and entirely divine. Some of them you might suspect but others will surprise you.

This book changed my life. After reading it, I was challenged to spend more time in God’s Word. My prayer life is stronger. My walk with Jesus is deeper. And it all begins with learning to hear God’s whisper!

2) Under Cover by John Bevere

Taken from Amazon’s description: “Ever wonder how to respond to a difficult boss? Why you should listen to them in the first place? What does God want me to understand about authority?

By teaching us how to properly relate to leadership, John shows why living under authority is better than we think.

The truth is, we will all one day have to follow the leader. Whether at school, at work, in the military, or even in the national political arena, the question of who will lead and who will follow is constantly before us.

Your response will determine your future.”

This book challenged my view of authority—in a good way! God used this book to teach me the importance of learning to come under the authority He’s placed over my life. The lessons learned by that have not only blessed me and my family but have taught us so much about what it means to be a godly leader. Get this book!

3) The Bait of Satan by John Bevere

Taken from Amazon’s description: “The Bait of Satan exposes one of the most deceptive snares Satan uses to get believers out of the will of God--offense. This trap restrains countless Christians, severs relationships, and widens the gulfs between us. Jesus said, "It is impossible that no offenses should come” (Luke 17:1). Although you will encounter offense, you can choose how you will react.

I’m so glad I read this book early on in my ministry! We live in probably one of the most easily offended generations thanks to social media and the internet. But offense is an age-old tactic of the enemy to trip you up! Every follower of Jesus needs to read this and learn to spot the bait before they fall into the trap of offense!

What are some books you have read

What books have you read that the Lord has used to get your attention? Write them down. Give them to a friend or that person the Lord lays on your heart. I know I have referred these three books to many new Christians over the years and each time they’ve come back and said how much they learned reading them.

I hope these resources are a blessing to you as much as they were to me!
