What Does Jesus Mean By 'My Yoke is Easy and My Burden is Light?'

By Matthew Maher

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” — Matthew 11:28–30

We all have needs in this life. And it is often the needs we have that determine the life we live.

In other words, we pursue that which we believe can fill the hole in our soul. And in the midst of a society that bombards us with so many voices inviting us to come get a quick fix — it is hard to decipher which invitation actually provides help and rest.

Yet, through the world’s false hopes of satisfaction, there is one voice that beckons us to come find true restoration.

Jesus said, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

This invitation should blow our minds because the King of the World didn’t invite the mighty and majestic or the powerful and prominent. No! He gladly invited the tired and weighed down to find rest in Him by “taking His yoke” upon us.

Masterfully, as Jesus was a carpenter Himself, we can trust that He custom-fits our yokes to rest perfectly upon our shoulders. But He doesn’t leave us there at this point. He takes the lead position, like a lead ox would, and He carries most of the weight and simply desires for me to experience His grace.

You see, as the world works us and sin weighs on us, Jesus still waits for us to come to Him. And when we learn His way and go willingly with His work, we find rest in our souls.

It’s a rest and peace that the world cannot produce. Yet God’s desire is to give it to those who come to Him for it. His yoke is a good fit and when we walk with Him in the journey of life, others around us will notice that our graceful going is in proportion to His grace that’s flowing.

So, can you hear Jesus’ invitation now?

It’s the one that tells you to come to Him and Him alone for your peace and purpose. It’s not religion, but relationship. It’s not a responsibility, but a response of humility based on His love for you.

You can trust Him, for He said of Himself, “I am gentle and lowly in heart.” (Matthew 11:29)
